Fresh Avocado Bubble Tea

Hope everyone is enjoying the last day of the long weekend!

Well, I’m currently in my third trimester and there is no doubt that this baby is half-Asian! Some of my cravings over the past 7 months are distinctly Asian foods, like coconut cream buns and avocado bubble tea. For those who don’t know, bubble tea is a Taiwanese drink, either milk tea-based or fruit smoothie-based, containing chewy tapioca balls. My bubble tea cravings have been pretty hardcore lately. I was in Calgary for a weekend in July and had bubble tea three times, trying out various bubble tea shops. And I only crave avocado bubble tea which makes it easier to justify because avocados are a pregnancy superfood, right? Something about it being a healthy fat, full of folic acid, calcium, and various vitamins? That’s how I justify it to myself anyway!

I’m sure there are places in Regina where I could get bubble tea, but I don’t trust Regina shops to use fresh ingredients in their bubble tea. The worst thing ever is bubble tea made from a packaged mix. Also, after doing a quick Google search of “bubble tea Regina”, I discovered that a fresh avocado bubble tea would cost me in excess of $7! Surely I can make a better and cheaper one at home!

My first stop was Ngoy Hoa, the Asian grocery store on 1580 Albert St, to buy specific Asian items required for this recipe that I didn’t have at home and would not find at a Canadian grocery store. Conveniently located in the same aisle at the store are the tapioca balls, big bubble tea straws (because normal straws aren’t big enough to suck up the bubbles), and plastic bubble tea to go cups. I did buy a sleeve of plastic cups in case I ever wanted to make a bubble tea to go. All of this came to under $10.

I love how fresh and refreshing this is! I’ll definitely continue to make my own avocado bubble tea at home, but I would love to hear about any recommendations for good bubble tea in Regina or even Calgary!

Serves: 1 Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 4-5 ice cubes
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

1

First prepare the tapioca balls per the packaged instructions. To make a single serving for myself, I brought 3 cups of water to a boil in a small pot. I added 1/4 cup of the tapioca balls, and boiled until they floated to the surface. I lowered the heat to medium, let it boil for another 3 minutes, turned off the heat, and left the tapioca balls in the pot for another 3 minutes. Then I drained them into a small colander and rinsed with cold water to cool them. Set aside.

2

Add the avocado flesh, condensed milk, milk and ice into a blender. (I just used my Magic Bullet) and blend it all up.

3

Place the tapioca balls into a glass, top with the blended avocado mixture, stick a big straw in it and enjoy!
